World Creation Myth

At first, there was Io. Io was perfect and Io was all.

Then there was a Voice. The Voice asked:

”How can the world be perfect if there is no contrast?”

Io thought about this and decreed that the Voice was correct. He then gave a mighty breath and with it, created Void.

But the Voice was not satisfied. It asked:

”But how can the world be perfect if it’s all the same?”

Again, Io thought about this, and again, decided that the Voice was correct. He took half of the Void and breathed chaos and matter into it, creating the Elemental Chaos. Then he took the rest into his claws and shaped it, imposing rules and order, creating the Astral Sea.

The Voice was still not satisfied. Again it asked:

”But how can the world be perfect if there are no beings in it?”

And again Io thought about this and again he decided that the Voice was correct. He took some matter from the Elemental Chaos and bound it by the rules of the Astral Sea, creating two Wyrms in his image. He named them Bahamut and Tiamat.

But the Voice was still not satisfied. It asked:

”But how can the world be perfect if the beings do not have a will of their own?”

Again, Io thought about this, and again, decided that the Voice was correct. To Bahamut he breathed more rules from the Astral Sea, instilling into him a sense of order and consideration. To Tiamat he added more matter and chaos from the Elemental Chaos, imbuing her with a mercurial spirit and impulsiveness.

Still the Voice was not satisfied. It asked again:

”Everything is very polarized. How can the world be perfect with no shades of grey?”

Again, Io agreed with the Voice. Seeing that Bahamut and Tiamat were pulling away from each other, Io buffeted his wings and created love. Only through an union of a male and a female could creation happen. And so Bahamut and Tiamat, despite their differences, found each other and created the Realm between the Elemental Chaos and the Astral Sea.

Some say that this was perfection and Io returned to just exist. Some say that he is still creating little details that the Voice say are missing from perfection. Some say that he is waiting for the moment when the world has evolved to the point of perfection. But truth is, Io does not answer prayers.

After creating the Realm, Bahamut and Tiamat created life. They created a complex system of prey and predation. This was not enough, however. They both desired for creatures of free will. So they decided to create children of their own.

Bahamut created beings that were closest to himself: The dragons. He gave them power, wisdom and long life which kept on rewarding them. He gave them power to shape the world with magic, the power of sorcery.

Tiamat created playthings for her; Weak beings called humans. She kept them as slaves, having them worship her. She gave them enough free will and ability to fully realize how small and insignificant they were, compared to her. And she made them delicious.

After witnessing her sister’s creations, Bahamut took pity to these people. He decided to give them his boons. To those who toiled in the mountains he gave tenacity and strength. To those who sculpted the works of art he gave long life. And to those who had least importance, to those he gave energy, drive and the ability to adapt.

But Tiamat was angry at Bahamut for interfering with her creations. But she stated that she would forgive his brother’s meddlings, if he would allow her to give her ”gifts” to his creations. Bahamut, knowing that it was only fair, allowed this. Tiamat imbued the dragons with her features: Greed, indifference, pride, cruelty. And so she got her retribution.

This altercation, however, brought to light the siblings’ differences, and both could see that they would forever meddle in each others’ affairs. Since they still loved each other, they decided to divide the divine duties to a pantheon of lesser divines. And so they created the Wyrms, Mishra, Nissha, Cruxis, Sithrakh, Quirion, Zariss, Ochrana and Ashanti. And they observed.
